To Terra Firma

This morning I realized I had started to think like a Venetian. Instead of taking the vaporetto Line 1 slowly slinking up the Grand Canal to Ferrovia, I walked the extra 10 min to Rialto carrying a suitcase and carry-on of clothes and lighting equipment and grabbed the line 2. Ten minutes is not much unless you’re carrying them over countless bridges. But it saved 30 minutes which allowed me time to stop for an espresso and cornetto before taking the train. Why take the slow boat when there is the express? At Ferrovia I board the train to Rome and like just after you pull the anchor in from a boat in the lagoon the Frecciarossa shoots off crossing Ponte della Libertà to the mainland.

Terra Firma. That’s what the Venetians call it. Dry land- ground that is distinct from the sea. I’m going to Italy! Living in Venice I don’t quite think of Venice as Italian. As my friend Alessandro always reminds me, “This is the Venetian Republic.” To me the Italy of my imagination is what lies beyond Mussolini bridge. Venice is another planet. A different universe. The train zips across the countryside - and I smile as it rolls to a stop in Florence - just seeing the station fills me with warm memories- and as we near Rome I get more excited. I exit the station and grab a taxi to the apartment where we are staying for the week.
