The Vortex

Before we arrived to Venice, I began to warn her. To explain to my sister @marvelousmissyhancock who was visiting me for her first trip to Europe - that the vortex was strong in Venice. She said “uh-huh” like she was listening, but I could tell she didn’t get it. I was speaking Klingon. I tried again. “Venice isn’t like other places.” I explain. Yes there are palaces and streets made of water, but it’s something different. “Like once you step off terra firma the rest of the world seizes to exist.” She looks unconvinced but happily nods. She’s excited to see my home. I try again. “It’s not like Paris where it’s a moveable feast. Paris goes with you. Venice doesn’t want you to leave.” She looks at me quizzically this time. Like she’s trying to understand this concept she knows is important to me. “When you’re in Venice it’s hard to remember the rest of the world exists.” The best way to get in or out of Venice is a water taxi. It shoots you straight in or out of the vortex so that suddenly you’re a part of that world. Coming out can be painful.

Venice is not of this planet. It’s its own universe that just so happens to be tethered to planet earth by Mussolini’s bridge. I explain this as we are on the train crossing said bridge. The concept is impossible to explain. I decide. She will have to experience it herself. Flash forward a few days later and we are leaving Murano and take the vaporetto to Piazzale Roma. I need to speak to the lovely girls at Sixt rental car about some upcoming trips. We hop off linea 3 and turn the corner and my sister comes to a halting stop. “No no no!” She yells. Almost involuntarily. “Where are we? I do not like this.” The harsh reality of a parking lot full of buses and pavement stood in front of us. “Let’s go back!” She cried. “You experienced it.” I said. “The vortex.” “I don’t like it.” She says again. It’s like walking through a clear glass wall. You hit it. With a thud. But then particles start to divide and you push yourself - or perhaps are pulled - through. Leaving Venice’s embrace is like leaving a birthing canal. You arrive. Bright lights. Noise. Blinking. Let’s go back.” she said again. “I need to see - to be- in Venice.
